Held Captive

Gary Haugen Founder of the International Justice Mission tells a story that I find touching and so true. It is also unfortunate that it applies to so many lives. So I thought I would share it with you and hope it makes you think the next time you are held captive in the visitor’s center.

Gary tells the story of when he was a young boy of about 10 years old and during the family vacation to Mount Rainier in Washington State with his father and two older brothers. Gary tells how they would hike; his father would always stay very close behind Gary for safety. Gary’s Father and brothers decide after hiking that they needed a little more adventure and that they would like to take a climb further up the mountain. Gary tells of the fear he began to feel and how it took him prisoner.

Gary feeling the fear of going up the mountain told his brothers and father how boring that sounded and he would prefer to stay and wait for them in the visitor’s center. They did their best to persuade little Gary that it would be a great adventure, full of fun and the spectacular scenery he would miss out on by not joining them. Finally his father gave in left Gary in the center and set off with Gary’s brothers.

After several hours of playing in the center Gary began to get bored, the stuffed animals no longer came to life, the videos on the TV’s after making the thirteenth loop no longer seemed interesting anymore. Gary looked out on to the mountain wondering where his father and brothers were. Finally after what seemed to be an eternity they returned with a story to tell. All the way back home they were talking about the exciting adventure, while little Gary remained silent unable to participate. At this time Gary made a promise to himself never to miss an adventure again, and in the future he would have a story to tell too. For that, log on to The International Justice Mission website for his exhilarating story.

In a recent speech That Gary gave at the Willow Creek 2008 Leadership Summit he made a profound statement when he said, So many people don’t reach their potential because they are afraid, These people tell themselves that they are just being smart, by not joining in the adventure is too risky, when what it really is, is fear, fear of leaving their comfort zone.

So guys let’s fight back and escape the visitors center that holds us captive, take our lives back so that we are able to join the adventure and climb to the mountain peaks in our real estate careers realizing the prosperity that God truly wants us to have.
