Ever wondered what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary, well here’s what I thinks the difference is. Being a boxing fan, and I suppose you could draw similar analogies from many sports, but today we’ll use the boxer. So many times the up and coming boxer gets the big break he’s been waiting for, a shot at the title or, maybe his first big fight with a top ranked contender. The young up and coming boxer who has shown so much talent in the ring in other fights, today fights in a defensive posture, showing too much respect for the opponent and you’ll here the ring announcer begin to say, he’s not fighting to win he’s just trying to finish the fight
So many of us in Real estate don’t fight to win, we only do enough to stay in the business. John Maxwell in his book Be a People Person writes the difference between playing to win and playing not to loose is often the difference between success and mediocrity. What way are you playing? Successful people are extraordinary simply because they do the extra to win not just survive. The ordinary believe that just surviving is an accomplishment in our world. Well it’s not, its mediocrity.
Doing the extra means taking the risk, and not being in that defensive posture while taking the next step in you career. John Maxwell also writes in his book, risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel, change, grow, or love. Chained by his certitudes he is a slave, only a person who takes risks is free. Benjamin Franklin said, “Show me a man who does not take risk and I’ll show you a failure.” People often think they are being smart not to risk, what they really are is being a coward, risk means you take that chance and stretch some more to get the victory.
That is why the boxer in the analogy lost the fight, his big opportunity to make a name for himself gone, because he would not do the extra and take the risk of being KO’d by throwing punches back. He thought he was fighting smart by being defensive. In boxing, it is as it is in life, when you throw a punch you leave yourself unprotected momentarily and that is where your opponent may find his opening. The same can be said in business, when you step up to take the opportunity you are exposed to risk, but without stepping up and taking that risk there is no forward momentum in life and that person will never have anything and will never be anything.
So I ask you what are you going to do extra, are you going step up and take that risk of developing a farm area, you frequently hear the extraordinary talk about, are you going to step up and invest in that contact management program you so desperately need to take your real estate career to take it to the next level? What risks are you willing to take to become extraordinary?
