Missed Opportunities

All of us have missed opportunities that have presented themselves to us in life. The reasons we miss these opportunities are multiple, here are a few, lack of preparation, fear, not recognizing the packaging and of course there is the lack of faith.

So many of us see the opportunity yet only circle it and I don’t mean like a shark, maybe more like a minnow. I know I have done this more than once in my life and kind of brings back memories of when I attended my first school dance and I know you guys know what I am talking about, you see a girl that you would like to ask to dance or maybe strike up a conversation with, you muster all the strength and courage you have and make a bee line for her, just short of reaching the prize you veer of to the left or to the right and circle around again, by the time you get back to her she’s already dancing with someone else, you know what I am talking about right. That is still happening to some of you guys out there today, except now, it has affected your successes that should have been yours, this habit of circling to see if it is safe has contributed to many missed opportunities, and you know what this circling has been going on for Over 3,000 years. Let’s take a look at the best example of this in history.

The route of the Israelites' wilderness journey between the Exodus and their entry into the Promised Land is listed in Numbers 33:1-50. The map plots the major points along that 40-year trek - that could have been accomplished in a matter of days had they not refused to go in when God gave them the opportunity to do so the first time. They missed the opportunity God had given them, the 40 years wandering was a deliberate delay:

Now why did they circle around, well the Bible tells us that when the scouts went out to take a look they saw that it was occupied by Canaanite’s and they were afraid even though God had promised them Israel. This happens to too many of us to this day. We see the prize but yet don’t go and get it, we choose to play it safe and begin this circling around, and some of us never stop circling until the prize is just a fuzzy image as it disappears over the horizon. We are running the risk every time we circle that the prize will not be there when we return. Seize the opportunity that comes your way and have faith that it is from God and success will be yours, remember the old adage “don’t look gift horses in the mouth.” Just go and claim it.
