What Lids Do You Need To Remove?

If you’re like me I wondered how lids applied in my life. This is a term that the author John Maxwell frequently uses in his many great books on leadership. Read on and you’ll begin to discover what lids hold you down or keep you in, Many employed people refer to it as the glass ceiling, they can’t get above a certain salary or position in their careers, the lid is the same for the entrepreneur, as real estate agents and entrepreneurs, we have lids that are in control of our real estate practice.

So what is the lid that you need to reach up and undo, and yes I do mean you do the reaching and the undoing, as it is only you who can unscrew that lid in your life. The first step is to recognize what our lids are, one of my many lids are relational and being able to show empathy. That’s huge in sales and especially when you are managing or leading. An example of ones lids could be from handling finances to their own accountability or anything else that repeatedly gets in your way.

Being honest in asking yourself what keeps you from getting to the next level is under this lid, do some soul searching, many times a lid lifter is brought into our lives through circumstance or, maybe there is that person in your life that tries your patience, you know what I mean, many times that person is a lid lifter, you must be on the lookout for them. It could be someone just inquiring about your being late for a meeting or why you are always under pressure to complete the job.

There is a story told about Abraham Lincoln that goes like this, President Lincoln had a meeting with someone during his presidency that was very difficult person, at the end of the meeting, as this person left the office Lincoln said to his aid, “I must get to know that man better.” Lincoln recognized a lid lifter and decided that it may be in the best interest of all to greater understand this person’s position and point of view. When these lid lifters come into our lives we need to take advantage of the learning experience.

Now lid lifters not only come as challenges but, also as coaches, managers and brokers. Seek them out put your thoughts on paper by starting a journal, by writing it down or journaling as it is called we are sometimes more rapidly able to work through these areas in our complicated lives.
