As the real estate market continues to contract so does the real estate licensee population. That’s a good thing. During the boom years hundreds of thousands nationally swarmed on to the scene, it was like the California gold rush of the 1840’s. First we see the number of weekend hobbyists begin to grow, and then like a flash we are overwhelmed with the swarming incompetence in the licensees that the state churns out, the real estate boards eagerly gobble up and compete for these new dues.
This is not to say that everyone who obtained a license during those years are all “fly by nights”. I know of many who have gotten trained and have become professional Realtors.
Today the swarming incompetent are disappearing and the pros are once again getting hired to complete the job. As the banks experience heavy losses through short sales and foreclosures, and homeowners have difficulty, they look toward those experienced agents to help navigate them through the mess. No matter how you look at it, to buy or sell a home in this market is much more difficult than it was before.
When times are good and properties are selling fast the masses begin to believe that real estate sales will make them rich. They make no commitment to the business; they are not interested in getting trained. They begin to swarm the licensing schools, pass the state exam and the brokers hoping to cash in on the boom compromise their companies’ standards and pay out top dollar to the incompetent who were only in it for a fast buck resulting in a market full these bunglers.
But here is the good news in this agonizingly slow market these agents wither away. The lure of easy money is gone, and those who dealt with them to save on commission quickly abandon these incompetent agents and as always, they turn to the pros that can get the job done.
So the conclusion is. Happy days are almost here again, if you’re a pro, hang in there your life is about to get good.
